“i know nothing about this boy, except that he makes you sad and he wears that stupid football jacket all the time”
so in my aerospace engineering class, my professor gave us a lecture on the history of aerospace, starting with isaac newton all the way up to people in the field today. he listed so many names, and in his entire two hour lecture, he only talked about one woman (the first woman in space, whose name i don’t even remember). this made me start thinking.. when was the last time you saw a female pilot? and why am i one of about 40 girls in my 200 person aerospace engineering class? i was talking to my mom about it and she gave me this absurd statistic from a documentary she watched: when 8 year olds were asked what they wanted to be, the same number of girls as boys responded by saying “the president”. by age 13, for every one girl who said she wanted to be president, there were 40 boys. WHAT? apparently the reason for this is the fact that by the time we hit puberty, we are more concerned with dress size than we are with our grades. i’m a girl, i am perfectly happy with the way i look, i have a boyfriend, and i am an aerospace engineer. its possible.
